Andrea Fraser

a1gb0000000xKT9AAM

Andrea Fraser (USA, born 1965) is a performance artist from New York who is primarily known for her ironic criticism of the art world. Her most famous work is probably 'Museum Highlights' (1989) in which she gives a guided tour of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Of the ubiquitous cafeteria, she says the following: "This room represents the heyday of colonial art in Philadelphia on the eve of the Revolution, and must be regarded as one of the very finest of all American rooms". In other performances, she imitates a drunken Martin Kippenberger ('Make Your Own Life: Artists In & Out of Cologne', 1995) or takes aim at art award ceremonies as a stripping opening speaker ('Official Welcome', 2001). She recently held solo exhibitions at the Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem (2007), Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York (2007), Wexner Center for the Arts (2006), Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (2005), Dunkers Kunsthus, Helsingborg, Sweden (2003) and the Kunstverein in Hamburg (2003). She is a lecturer at UCLA and was guest lecturer at Cooper Union, Columbia University, Bard College and Städelschule, Frankfurt.
Andrea Fraser will be giving the one hundredth talk in the Curating the Library series.
