Gijs Van Vaerenbergh is a joint venture set up by Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout van Vaerenbergh in 2007. They create projects in public spaces, often site-specific interventions, installations and constructions that give rise to interaction with the surroundings. This makes for an artistic practice that is informed by an exploration of the foundations of construction itself and its impact on the viewer. This duo uses the language of architecture in a metaphorical way, as a medium for relatively autonomous and self-reflecting projects. This approach makes the work of Gijs Van Vaerenbergh interpretable on several levels, from meta-architectural to artistic.
