Hans-Ulrich Obrist studied Economics and Political Science before turning his attention to contemporary art. In 1992 he founded the Robert Walser Museum in Switzerland and at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris started up the 'Migrateur' series of exhibitions. He is a professor in the faculty of architecture at the University of Venice, a correspondent on the Italian magazine 'domus' and the editor of agnes.b.'s widely distributed free magazine 'Point d'ironie'. His projects include the exhibitions 'Küchenausstellung' at St Gallen (1991), 'Gerhard Richter', Nietzsche Haus, Sils-Maria (1992), the travelling exhibitions 'Do-it' and 'Cities on the Move' (since 1994), the 1st Berlin Biennale (with Klaus Biesenbach and Nancy Spector, 1998), 'Mutations: Evenement culturel sur la ville contemporaine', Arc en Rêve, Bordeaux (with R. Koolhaas, S. Kwinter, S. Boeri, 2000); 'Utopia Station', Venice Biennale (with Molly Nesbit and Rikrit Tirivanjia, 2004) and 'Uncertain States of America' at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo (2005). His books include 'World soup' (Munich, 1993), 'Unbuilt roads: 107 unrealized projects' (Ostfildern, 1997), 'Laboratorium' (with Barbara Vanderlinden, Antwerp 1999) and 'Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Interviews, vol. 1' (2003). Since 2006 he has been the codirector of the Serpentine Gallery in London.
