For more than twenty years, the Japanese keyboardist and composer Hiromi has been building up an oeuvre that cuts diagonally across genres. From sharp bebop to sophisticated Western new music, she masters it all and invariably performs it with boundless application and infectious energy. On her recent album Sonicwonderland she goes one step further. Inspired by the revolutionary pioneering work of Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, among others, she dives into the deep end with a special (jazz) quartet, only to unleash a hyper-catchy blend of effervescent piano jazz and crackling fusion. Gargantuan grooves, ingenious compositions and wacky ideas that seem to have been bodily transported from old-school computer games come together in surprising and generous pieces – like a soundtrack to the 21st century. A sound that proves that for now, Hiromi’s curiosity and creativity are boundless.
