Ian Bostridge - GEANNULEERD

Ian Bostridge has unfortunately had to cancel his recital at deSingel for family reasons. It will be postponed until the 2009-10 season. The English tenor Ian Bostridge is an increasingly convincing Lieder singer. His voice has become darker and richer without losing its suppleness and clarity. Able, as he always is, to offer a profound understanding of the texts, Bostridge presents intelligent and often very personal interpretations. For each song he finds the most fitting colours with his long-standing pianist Julius Drake. Together they are daring, coming up with surprises to throw new light on songs that you thought you already knew. They open their Schubert recital with the enchanting 'Im Frühling'. It is the first in a group of songs to pieces by Schulze on unrequited love and the comforting power of nature. Thereafter they embark upon a trip that explores the dark depths of night and death via the poems of Mayrhofer. With some ironic, politically tinged songs such as 'Die Forelle' and 'Des Fischers Liebesglück', the music becomes lighter and dance-like in tone. To finish they dive back into the mysterious night full of shadows and spirits.
