Boris Charmatz

a1gb0000000xK0nAAE

Boris Charmatz studied dance at the prestigious 'Ecole de danse' in Paris and continued his education at the 'Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse' in Lyon. He then began working as a dancer with, amongst others, the choreographers Odile Duboc and Régine Chopinot. In 1992, he founded l'Association Edna together with Dimitri Chamblas. In 1993, he and Chamblas created the duet 'A bras le corps' which, in addition to being their debut, was also their manifesto: "The body, do we really need it to be able to dance or can we do without it?" The body has also always occupied a central position in Boris Charmatz's later work. Even works in which it is denied and hidden are about the quality and presence of the human body and its relationship with dance. Since 1997, he has generated a highly diverse range of projects within l'Association Edna, ranging from improvisation projects, installations and films to exhibitions and excursions. He was recently appointed as the artistic director of the CCNRB (Centre Choréographique National de Rennes et de Bretagne). In addition to his work as a choreographer, he is also active as an interpreter of the work of other choreographers, such as 'It's not funny' by Meg Stuart. In 2003, together with Isabelle Launay, he released a book entitled 'Entretenir/à propos d'une danse contemporaine'. His book 'Je suis une école' was also published recently.
